From the Evening News, July 30, 1992 - A MAJOR investigation began today into a fumes drama at a showpiece Bolton pool which left 23 bathers in hospital.
About 200 swimmers - many in just bathing costumes - were evacuated from The Water Place. Busloads were ferried away from the popular touristy attraction on Great Moor Street, as fire crews wore wearing breathing apparatus and chemical protection suits to make the building safe. The problem is thought to have begun in the water purifying plant room containing equipment to help clean the water in the pool.

BRITAIN'S second largest teaching union today backed keeping the cane. Its general secretary, Mr Terry Casey, warned Education Secretary Mrs Shirley Williams: "Any attempt to ban corporal punishment will be taken as a vote of no confidence by the majority of teachers." Parliament and education authorities must actively support both teachers and conscientious parents in maintaining good discipline, said Mr Casey.

THERE are now only eight horses in the service of Bolton Cleansing Department; shortly there will be only four, and in a few months' time it is likely that the department will be completely mechanized.
Bolton's Cleansing and Sewage Committee received a vetinerary surgeon's report at its meeting yesterday which recommended that four of the horses - Teddy (14), Trooper (25), Colonel (12) and Monty (14) - should be taken off their duties because they are worn out. It is not yet known what will be the fate of the horses; suggestions were made yesterday that they should be sold, slaughtered, or grazed out. It has been the policy of the Committee in the past to slaughter redundant horses to prevent them from falling into the hands of people who might overwork or exploit them.

ACCORDING to the "Westminster Gazette" an English company will shortly put wireless telegraph and telephone appliances on the market. The company will begin operations on a large scale almost immediately, and will possess two factories, one in Buckinghamshire and a second one in France. The system differs in many important respects from that of Signor Marconi. A complete telephone for short distances is quoted at only £4, which is the initial expense, and a further Royalty of £1 is payable every year.
The telephone arrangement, it is claimed, will carry speech through the ground distinctly for two miles. Beyond that distance communication will have to be established by means of a telegraph appliance and by the use of the Morse code. The price for this portable telegraph and telephone is 10 guineas and the usual £1 Royalty.
