SOME time ago John Stott contacted me with a tale about his grandad having lifted the European Cup at Peter Thompson's testimonial game (Bolton v Liverpool) in 1978. He wondered if anyone had a photograph.

He now writes: "I didn't hear anything for ages, and had given up hope until a couple of weeks ago when I was contacted by a gentleman and his wife who actually had some cine-film of the game and remembered the occasion vividly.

"They said I could borrow the film, and I had it transferred to VHS videotape; lo and behold, my grandad is there taking the cup from Emlyn Hughes. He appeared only briefly, but he was thrilled to bits. Thanks for the article in Looking Back - I would never have received anything if it wasn't for your help.

"I am trying to persuade my grandad to write a book of his numerous stories from Burnden and beyond."

Well, Mr Stott, I am glad that the story got a result; it only proves that reactions from older people are not necessarily instant!
