OVER the years I have written quite a lot about Somerford Hall camp, where Bolton children used to go for a break in the years following the the Second World War.
It was mentioned again in the 50 Years Ago section on July 16, when I said that the camp had closed the previous December.
I have received a letter from Mr Jack Hodgson, of Normanby Street, Bolton, who says: "Closed it may be but the camp is still there - at least it was in the middle of February last, when I was in that area of Cheshire and decided to call in, as I have before over the years.
"It is well overgrown, and the buildings are well rotted, but all the dormitories, the great hall, dining room, classrooms, swimming pool, and one shower toilet block are still there (the other block having been blown down in storms a year or two ago, so the caretaker told me). The place has also been used as a mushroom farm. I hope that you will let the readers of your page know that the old place is still there."
