POLICE are investigating complaints that Bolton Wanderers' supporters were pelted with coins at their Premiership clash against Birmingham City.

Fans have complained to the police that they were "under attack" from rival fans for almost the entire second half of the game at St Andrews on Saturday.

There have been reports of supporters being injured and allegations that match stewards failed to respond to complaints.

The FA Premier League has been made aware of the complaints but the Football Association, the organisation that deals with crowd trouble, says it has received no reports of any incidents either from the match referee Chris Foy or their crowd safety observers.

But Wanderers and Greater Manchester Police -- acting on behalf of West Midlands Police -- have responded to supporters' calls and are appealing for additional information.

Mrs Eileen Rigby, a steward on one of the Wanderers' Travel Club coaches at the game, said: "I know one lady was hurt.

"Coins were being thrown throughout the whole of the second half and there were a lot of people complaining.

"There were no police in evidence, inside or outside the ground, and stewards aren't as effective.

"Some people moved to safer parts of the stand.

"I contacted the Premier League and they are taking a serious view of the complaints.

"They want to hear from any supporters who witnessed the coin throwing."

Birmingham City officials say they are investigating.

Anyone who was hit by a coin or has any information that will help police with their enquiries is asked to contact PC Garry Lee from GMP's football liaison unit on 0161 856 5776.
