MORE than half the UK manufacturers who responded to a recent poll remain undecided about the wisdom of joining the single European currency.

But it showed that although companies are less impressed by growth opportunities within the EU market, more now support the euro.

The survey was carried out by NOP on behalf of the Engineering Employers' Federation.

It also showed that, despite misgivings, most companies see membership as

inevitable by the end of the decade.

Andrew Semple of the EEF in the North West, said: "Our survey shows that whilst manufacturers are becoming more internationalised and more exposed to the euro, the majority of them still remain undecided on this issue.

"Apart from a more competitive exchange rate, what manufacturers need most is to see their largest market -- the EU -- perform more strongly. Whether or not the government is seeking to raise business support for early euro membership, we urge it to redouble its efforts to make the eurozone a more dynamic marketplace by pushing for greater liberalisation and seeking reform to the Stability and Growth Pact."

Mr Semple added: "Alhough it is very important to some industries such as motor vehicles, most of manufacturing is not crying out for an early decision on the euro.

"However, there is a clear role for government to provide more and better

information to help ensure manufacturers are not missing out any opportunities generated by the euro."
