THE national crisis in vetting school staff is also affecting workers in hospitals, care homes and social services departments trying to recruit foster carers, it emerged today.

The Association of Directors of Social Services (ADSS) said the backlog in police checks at the Criminal Records Bureau had hit local authorities badly although the situation was now improving.

"It is actually getting better. It has been bad but clearly the amount of resources the Government has been putting into the CRB has meant the situation is improving," an ADSS spokesman said.
