FOR several seasons past, the less conservative fashion writers tried, without much success, to sell Englishwomen the idea of wearing brighter colours. But the customers had been used to wearing pastel shades since their nursery days, and they set up a lot of resistance to the scheme.

SATURDAY next, the day fixed for the Coronation of Their Majesties, the King and Queen, will be observed in Bolton with a kind of modified jubilation. The day has been declared to be a Bank Holiday, but in Bolton bank holidays are not as a rule respected as generally as in some industrial centres. The banks, the County Court offices, the public offices at the Town Hall etc., will be closed in obedience to the King's command, but at the shops, mills, and foundries, business will be conducted as usual. The Mayor (Ald. Miles) has accepted an invitation to attend the Coronation, and will, therefore, be absent from Bolton. A special Council meeting will be held on Saturday morning, followed by a service at the Parish Church. For the rest of the day the celebrations will be confined to bands on the Town Hall steps in the afternoon, and in the Park in the evening.
