PLANS for a new multi-million pound police headquarters in Bolton have been given the go ahead.

The proposed divisional HQ on land at Scholey Street was approved by planning chiefs.

The new centre on the former site of Burnden Park will replace the existing Bolton central station on Le Mans Crescent.

It is hoped that building work could begin by this summer and staff will be able to move in by 2003.

The exact cost of the new station has not been disclosed, but it is part of a £81.5m scheme which will see 16 other police buildings developed across Greater Manchester.

Chairman of planning Councillor Prentice Howard said the area of land is currently an eyesore.

And she added: "I welcome this new police station for the town."
