A MAN told police he stole chocolate because he wanted to go to prison, a court was told.

Neil Corness, aged 38, of Homefield Green, Deane, said going to prison was the only way he could curb his "chronic alcoholism", Bolton magistrates heard. He admitted stealing chocolate, worth £9.77, from a newsagents shop.

Magistrates sentenced him to one day in jail and ordered him to pay costs of £45 and to pay £9.77 compensation. Corness was told he was being "given a chance".
