RSPCA chiefs in Bolton have warned of the dangers of keeping exotic pets after a North-west youngster was bitten by a tarantula.
The boy, who has not been identified, was discharged after treatment at Trafford General Hospital.
RSPCA officers found the rare spider -- an Indian female about five-inches long -- and are looking to find a suitable home for it.
Spokesman Kevin Hegarty said thousands of neglected exotic animals were dumped or handed to the RSPCA every year.
He said: "The main danger from a tarantula bite is an allergic reaction.
"Exotic animals do not make good pets. It is a huge undertaking."
Latest RSPCA figures regarding levels of cruelty prosecutions and convictions are due to be published later this month.
