KEVIN Nolan could be on the fast track to major England honours.

The Wanderers' teen sensation continues his climb up the international ladder next week when he makes his first appearance for the England Under-20s at the Reebok Stadium on Wednesday.

And his coach at that level, Martin Hunter, predicts that the midfielder could quickly progress to the under-21s.

There is certainly the incentive to make that step up with the carrot of a place in David Platt's squad for the European Under-21 Championships which take place in Slovenia in May.

"Kevin Nolan is an outstanding young professional with Premiership experience," says Hunter.

"The opportunity to play at this level will help him and if he continues to progress at such a rapid rate he will be knocking on the door of the under-21s squad.

"The under-20s is a great initiative to progress to the under-21s level. It is the perfect transition."

Club boss Sam Allardyce feels the game against Finland will be a boost for Nolan but notes that there is no need for him to be rushed.

"A bit of international recognition is great," says Allardyce.

"But Kevin's so young that he'll still be eligible to play for the Under-21s next season. So time is on his side."
