AN INNOVATIVE health and fitness scheme to help patients who have had a heart attack is earmarked for a top award.

An Oscars-style prize ceremony will be staged later this month with the Bolton Cardiac Rehabilitation Scheme tipped to win the £13,000 prize money.

The scheme was set up to support patients receovering after having a heart attack.

It is a joint venture between the Health and Fitness Team, the Royal Bolton Hospital and the Bolton Cardiac Support Group.

Heart patients in Bolton are given access to fitness suites, circuit classes and ranger-led country park walks.

The Health Challenge Awards are staged in the North-west each year and on March 21 will be held at a top hotel in Warrington.

Olympic medal winning high jumper Steve Smith will hand out the prizes.

Awards organiser Lesley Burn said: "For the past ten years, the Health Challenge Awards has succeeded in unearthing and rewarding organisations whose health promoting activities have had a real impact on people's lives.

"The contenders for this year's awards are as creative and effective as ever and we are delighted to be able to recognise them."
