PUPILS at a Bolton secondary school are learning about their role in the Commonwealth.

Students at The Deane School have been taking part in a series of projects ahead of Commonwealth Day which is being celebrated on Monday.

The children have designed artwork inspired by the flags of the countries that make up the Commonwealth.

On Monday, Bolton's Mayor Kevan Helsby will unveil a gigantic 17-metre banner across the side of Bolton Arena.

Badminton Olympic bronze medallist Simon Archer will attend the celebrations which coincides with the launch of the Spirit of Friendship festival.

More than 50 children will wave New Zealand flags to mark Bolton's link-up with that country.

In Manchester, a giant screen will be erected for people to follow the launch of a Commonwealth Games baton relay taking place at Buckingham Palace.

The Commonwealth Games, from July 25 to August 4, will include a badminton tournament at Bolton Arena and cycling in Rivington.
