THE articles by your journalist Irma Heger on health issues are commendable in bringing to the attention of young people the perils of unprotected sexual activity, which results in an alarming increase in transmitted diseases.

It is in this regard, apart from the moral stance, that Life and other pro-life organisations have condemned the availability of the morning-after-pill (Levonelle) over the counter without a doctor's prescription.

How ironic that those in positions of authority and influence, who support the availability of this powerful drug to women, should be so inconsistent, for your issue February 26 quotes a Dr Eric Curless on the question of Viagra.

Dr Curless is critical of the Government for proposing that a number of medicines are to be re-classified and available over the counter to cut NHS costs. He states that it will not be welcomed by the medical profession.

If so, this is hardly a criterion. We don't hear his voice or that of the profession as a body criticising the availability of the morning-after-pill, when, without a prescription from their doctor, women may well be taking this pill when on other medication, or worse abusing drugs. This their doctor would know when a pharmacist can not be in a position to know.

We would hope to have a more consistent and rational policy from the medical profession. But that is hardly likely from the BMA, whose attitude in recent years on a range of issues has been lamentable.
