A SALFORD school has been selected to serenade sporting stars as they arrive for the Commonwealth Games in July.
Pupils from St George's Church of England Primary School in Charlestown will be formally greeting the athletes by singing to them during a series of welcoming ceremonies in Manchester.
The initiative aims to create a warm and friendly atmosphere in the city and provide an inspirational start to the Games for sporting stars and visitors.
Each welcome ceremony, taking place between 16 and 24 July, will involve the athletes of up to four countries at a time and will last a total of 45 minutes. Team sizes will vary from six to 600 athletes.
Jane Tyers, acting head of St George's, said: "We will be working hard to ensure we are all in fine voice for the Commonwealth Games. It's great to be part of this international sporting spectacular."
Salford Councillor John Warmisham, who is a school governor at St George's, added: "I'm really proud of the school. Over the last few years, it has gone from strength to strength. Staff and children should be delighted that they have been chosen for this honour. I'm sure they will be singing from the rooftops."
