ON the odd occasion I have had the pleasant experience of visiting our traditional English hostelries in and around Bolton.

Over the years environments have changed, and many have taken on a more modern ambient outlook.

However in some, when I have answered a call of nature, muffled voices are sometime heard and furtive glances cast in one's direction.

In the corners of darkened vaults, clouds of strange smelling vapours can be detected as they mingle with the tobacco smoke.

We are now told that the smokers of cannabis will no longer be prosecuted! The day has been won! The secrecy can now be cast aside -- "all can come out".

The question is, that to be in this new free forward thinking environment, we may still develop cancer by passive smoking.

But our concerns will now be diminished because of our passive high.

Is this some kind of progress?
