LOCAL historians have taken stock of an important piece of a village's past.
They have removed the old village stocks in Euxton to ensure they were not damaged during road widening work.
Members of Chorley and District Historical and Archaeological Society carried out the excavation with the help of Euxton Parish Council. All necessary information was recorded -- not just about the stocks themselves, but also an adjoining well.
Jack Smith, of the society, explained: "The stocks were last used about the mid-19th century and since then the wooden parts have decayed. The stone posts were stored at Boarded Barn Farm, Euxton, until a new village location could be found.
"Unfortunately this has not been possible and the stone posts are now being erected in Euxton's new Millennium Green in the grounds of Euxton Hall Hospital."
Jack, together with society colleague Stuart Whalley, made new wooden footboards for the stocks which would have been used to teach drunks a lesson.
These will be refitted to the relocated stock posts in the next week or so.
