WESTHOUGHTON Cricket Club could move from its 100-year-old home if new proposals are given the green light.

The future of the sports organisation will be discussed at a meeting next week when members will vote on plans to move away from the existing ground off Cricketers Way.

They will be told that the club has plans to sell the land and move to a new location within the town.

Club chairman Brendan Derham said the proposals were still at an early stage and he could not give many details.

He adedd: "If anything happens it will be for all the right reasons and will benefit all the community.

"But it is up to the members. If they vote against it, it will not go ahead."

It is thought the club could sell the land to homes developers. The team would then relocate to another site.

Mr Derham said the group would definitely be staying in the town.

It is likely any move would be completed by 2003.

The new ground would also be used by the two rounders teams which are also run by the club.

A letter has been sent to all members informing them of the special general meeting which will be held at the clubhouse at 7.30pm tomorrow week.

All members who are 18 and over are invited to attend to hear the proposals, express their opinions and vote.

The 2001 membership book is needed for entry to the meeting.
