TONGE Boxing Club's young middleweight Alan Catherall made a spectacular comeback from his recent suspension to record a terrific points win over the East Lancs and East Cheshire champion, Mark Nielson from the Ardwick ABC.

Catherall's suspension has had nothing to do with any misbehaviour on his part but was purely on medical grounds when a heart murmur was suspected at a routine medical before a fight.

Nielson is a natural light heavyweight but Catherall had no hesitation in stepping up the weights to take the fight. Giving away half a stone he used his superior boxing skills and wider vocabulary of shots to take the sting out of the champion from the start. With a series of punishing body blows he slowly but inexorably sapped the strength from the Ardwick man to deliver his unanimous points win.

His coach at the Tonge Moor club, Tom Battel, enthused that this was a massive performance from Alan against a much heavier man who has previously fought Courtney Fry, probably the second best amateur in the country.

P.S. You have a photo of Alan Catheral that would go nicely with this piece
