A COUNCILLOR says he is confident the brakes will be put on speeding motorists in his ward after holding an on-site meeting with county highways chiefs.

Ralph Snape requested the meeting at the blackspot -- Collingwood Road, Chorley -- where he fears a tragic accident is just waiting to happen.

He handed over 40 individual letters from local residents who urged councillors and officials to take action, and recommended ways to tackle the situation.

The gathering comprised of county councillor Nora Ward, cabinet chairman of highways and transportation; Terry Carter, county section manager for traffic safety; ward borough councillors Ralph Snape and his wife Joyce Snape and Tony Gee; councillor Danny Gee, chairman of Chorley's traffic regulation committee; east ward councillor Mary Wilson and a couple of residents.

Mr Snape, an independent borough councillor, said: "All aspects were looked into, it was a very constructive meeting. The chairman, Nora Ward, was very supportive. She accepted all the letters and has agreed to contact Chorley Borough Council's highways department to see if they can work out a certain amount of action which can be done."

He added: "It's the first time the county council has visited. I asked it to be taken on board as an urgent item which they have agreed to do.

"I was happy but I will be happier when we get some results."

Mr Snape said a range of safety measures have been suggested -- including crossings, speed cameras and road humps.

He said: "I know the amount of traffic will be reduced by the link road and by-pass, but that will not stop the ones that do come through speeding. You will not stop the idiot element.

"The residents want something to be done because someone will get killed. One death is one too many."

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: "We agreed there was an issue there that needed some consideration. Although the link road would alleviate some of the traffic volume it will not necessarily do anything for speeding.

"It is possible mobile speed cameras will be used."
