A CHORLEY bridge has been earmarked for special treatment as officials have a bash at tackling a growing problem.

Work is set to take place on Coppull Station Bridge, Spendmore Lane, as part of a joint effort by Railtrack and Lancashire County Council who are getting to grips with 'bridge bashing' -- when a vehicle collides with them.

A number of bridges, owned by Railtrack, have been identified and plans are being drawn up to improve lighting, signing and road markings. Bridge fascias will also be painted to make them more visible to drivers.

County Councillor Nora Ward, cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: "Whenever a vehicle hits a bridge it causes disruption and damage.

"It is clear that action needs to be taken now to avoid further unfortunate incidents."

Ken Ball, Coppull ward councillor and leader of the Liberal Democrats on Chorley Borough Council, welcomed the action.

He said: "The bridge was hit approximately 18 months ago and they put signs on it asking for people to give them a ring if they saw anyone who hit it.

"We did apply 12 months ago for funding. It is very dark under the bridge and at the other side there should be a lamp and it could certainly do with road markings."
