A PROUD grandmother plans to give her granddaughter a special gift after an excited phone call to say she had achieved the grades she needed to enter the London School of Economics.

Freda Catterson, of Laburnum Road, Chorley, still has a medal which used to belong to her late mother-in-law who would now be granddaughter Rebecca's great grandmother.

It was awarded to Elfleda Daisy Farrow in 1909 from an institution in Wimbledon where she was studying accountancy. And although Freda suspects it could have been awarded for high achievement, she doesn't really know and would like to be able to tell Rebecca what the medal was for.

She said: "Rebecca has worked so hard to achieve her goal -- I really wanted to give her something special but I also need to know more about the medal.

"Engraved on the gold and silver medal are the letters WFWGC, the name E.D.Farrow and the year, 1909 -- I don't even know which school she was at. All I know is that she became a successful accountant."

The Evening Telegraph's sister paper, The Chorley Citizen, has offered to help Freda by sending this information to newspapers in Wimbledon who can then print the appeal in the hope someone will recognise the medal.

Freda added: "Rebecca knows nothing about it at the moment -- she will be too busy celebrating with all the other young people who have just got their results.

"She has known for a long time that she wanted to study law in London and she has got what she wanted through sheer determination."

She added: " I am very proud of her and can't wait to give her this special gift which has been handed down through the generations."

Anyone who knows anything about this type of medal, is asked to ring Freda Catterson on 01257 265800.
