MINERS can win a "standard of living never before dreamed of", Mr Joe Gormley, President of the Mineworkers, said today. "We are on the way to achieving, by quiet negotiation, benefits for our members worth millions of pounds." The way was not necessarily through large wage rises, but through the value of concessionary coal, free clothing, subsidised transport, "and a lot of other things."

Horwich Band, which only three years ago ranked as one of the finest in the country, has decided to disband. This decision was taken by a small group of supporters and officials at a special meeting last night. Mr Ernest Ambler, chairman, said they had no money, very few supporters, and most of their players had joined other bands.

Formed in 1873 as the Horwich Old Public Subscription Band, they became nationally famous in 1906 when placed third in the competition at Crystal Palace. In 1943, they won the One Hundred Guineas Gold Championship Challenge Cup in Class A at the Belle Vue contest. Towards the close of the war the name of the band was shortened to the Horwich Band. In 1948 the band was at its peak, and although not among the prize winners, it made a number of broadcasts and enjoyed its most financially successful year.

ON Sunday afternoon a young man named Frederick Green, aged 20 years, of Hill Top, Little Hulton, was drowned in one of the lodges at Blackleach, Little Hulton. The deceased entered the water about three o'clock with the intention of swimming to a point about 25 yards off. In the middle of the distance he was noticed to throw his hands up and then to sink. The body was recovered in about four hours afterwards. The deceased was to have come into possession of £500 and some house property next Christmas, when he would have attained his majority.

THE war in Turkey has begun, and since its commencement the conflict has extended to such magnitude as to make it one of a very serious character. The initiative taken by the Prince of Servia has been followed by the Prince of Montenegro; Bosnia is in arms; a general rising in reported in Bulgaria; and Roumainia is expected to follow.

Thus the greater part of European Turkey is at war with the Government. Early in the week several engagements were fought and blood was shed, but the reports are so contradictory that it is impossible to say what has been the result.
