Manchester League side Pennington started off their Goldline Trophy campaign in positive fashion with a workmanlike performance that ended the challenge of Turton.

Pennington opened the scoring in the twentieth minute when Steve Booth collided with Turton goalkeeper Bradshaw and Carl Caffrey slotted into the empty net. Caffrey looked a constant menace and it was against the run of play that Turton equalised when Mark Williams' pinpoint cross was met by Mark Hughes' close range header.

Pennington re-established their lead shortly before the break when Caffrey latched onto Heenan's through ball to put the hosts into a half-time lead. They could have had another on the stroke of the interval when Mahon struck the upright with Bradshaw beaten but the game was wrapped up midway through the second period when Power's centre was met by Steve Booth who gratefully accepted the tap in. The game descended into a scrappy affair from thereonin, with Turton offering themselves a lifeline through Legg's late goal.

Turton's defeat blew Group D wide open, even more so with Blackrod Town's 4-0 thrashing of Radcliffe Amateurs. Blackrod took the lead after 17 minutes when Andy Morris netted, and Darren Shaliker felt hard done by to have a goal disallowed for a foul just before the break. Town stepped up the tempo yet further in the second half and doubled their initiative six minutes after the re-start through Tony Mercer. Morris doubled his tally for the evening with his third of the tournament on the hour mark before Daryl Martinus swept home a free kick to complete the rout.

Group A action this evening sees Golborne Sports entertain Eagley whilst Dobbies Veterans tackle Atherton Town at Bolton County. Both matches kick-off at 6:30pm.

Tomorrow night's action is just as promising, with defending champions Charnock Richard travelling to Hindsford whilst Atherton LR entertain Elton Fold at Crilly Park.

Spectators travelling to the latter match should note that kick-off is at 7:30pm.
