A MAN with a promising career in the RAF will now be booted out of the service after he was jailed for jabbing a bottle in another man's face.

Commanding officer Flt Ltnt Elizabeth Nicholls told the court that if Anthony Traynor was sent to jail he would be discharged.

Traynor was in a nightclub in Bury when victim Andrew Davies accidentally bumped into him.

After a short stand-off Traynor thrust a bottle into his face which broke and cut Davies causing him to bleed heavily.

Traynor, aged 23, of Halvard Avenue, Bury, appeared at Bolton Crown Court for sentence for unlawful wounding in the attack on March 10 this year. Prosecutor Tina Langdale said Davies bumped into Traynor and his girlfriend as he left the dancefloor.

Traynor thrust the bottle which smashed into Davies' face. He suffered two cuts needing 12 stitches.

When the police arrived Traynor immediately admitted his guilt and said it would be the end of his career in the RAF.

The court heard Traynor, who was a tradesman in the RAF, was under stress because of exams he was taking.

Flt Ltn Nicholls said Traynor was an excellent airman with a good future. He had been a course leader and had been a valuable asset.

She said if he was jailed he would be dismissed from the force but if he received a community sentence he would be on probation for six months in the RAF. She said his training had so far cost the RAF £110,000.

Judge Bruce Macmillan said the assault had happened in depressingly familiar circumstances when people had drunk too much.

He said it was his public duty to impose a custodial sentence and that he took no pleasure in jailing Traynor for nine months.
