COMMUTERS were given a welcome boost today when train drivers called off a 24-hour strike.

Officials from ASLEF accepted a new deal offered by First North Western, averting seven days of industrial action planned over the next month.

The union claimed the company had broken a signed undertaking to introduce a 35-hour working week by May this year.

Andrew Murray, a spokesman for ASLEF, said: "The dispute has ended because management at First North Western have met our demands and a 35 hour week will come in in September. We are delighted. This is a great victory for ASLEF."
