CHORLEY Lions' new president Yvonne Day is hoping to be a 'roaring' success in her new role after she was voted the first female president in the history of the club.

In its 26-year history, Chorley Lions has seen a number of presidents come and go, but never before a female.

Now Euxton girl Yvonne, 33, is more than happy to take on the role which will involve her overseeing all manner of efforts to raise funds for charity.

Yvonne said: "There was no rule saying presidents had to be male, it's just that most organisations end up with male presidents."

She said she is proud to be associated with the Lions, describing it as "the largest service organisation in the world with 1.4 million members in 42,000 clubs across the globe."

And as well as being the first female president, Yvonne is also the youngest in Chorley history: "You could argue it is in my blood, as I took over from her dad, Cyril Scott," she said. Yvonne joined Chorley Lions as a volunteer seven years ago, and then became a full member. She was voted in by the then president, her father, and the club's 13 members. She said: "I feel I know enough about the club to be a good president. I want to show that it isn't just a men's organisation and try to get across the message that women should join.

"I am honoured and proud to be the youngest president and representing Chorley at other Lions clubs."

Chorley Lions' motto is "We serve", and over 26 years they have raised almost £200,000 for charities, through events such as the Swimarathon, an Easter egg raffle and a bonfire night at Astley Park on November 5. They also have a varied social calendar with canal trips, theme nights and treasure hunts.

Chorley Lions meet at the Dressers Pub, Briers Brow, Wheelton on the first and third Wednesday of every month. Call Roger on 01257 262090 for more information.
