A MAN claimed in court that he had been ordered to steal to clear a debt. Philip Herdson, aged 24, told Bury magistrates he was stopped by two men, one of whom he owed £20. He was told to take a mobile phone from a car parked in Ramsbottom and the debt would be cleared.
But Herdson was seen crouching down at the side of the car and was chased and caught. A rear window of the car was then found smashed. Herdson, of Limefield Brow, Bury, who pleaded guilty to unlawful damage, had his case adjourned until July 19 for reports.
