THE tribute you paid (June 25) to Miss Annie Miller, the 94-year-old former teacher and principal of the Women's College in Clarence Street who died recently, was a well-deserved one.
I remember her well as a sympathetic and inspiring teacher of boys at Brandwood Street School in the 1930s (Nat Lofthouse, in a class a year ahead of me, must have been taught by her).
Whenever I read or hear harsh criticism of the teaching profession I think of Miss Miller and other dedicated stalwarts of the Brandwood Street staff, plus people like Mrs Emma Saxelby and "Pip" Porter at Bolton School, who gave the lie to the critics.
I was fortunate to be able to visit Miss Miller on a number of occasions at her nursing home and reminisce about the past. She will be remembered by many as an outstanding teacher and impressive human being.
