FOOTBALL'S voting season is here and, as usual, the football writers and professionals have got it wrong.

There are more deserving cases than Teddy Sherringham for the player of the season award and how can you not have Gudni Bergsson in the PFA First Division team?

To put matters right here are my awards.

Player of the season: Lee Bowyer (marginally from Stephen Gerrard).

Manager of the season: George Burley (turns average players into world beaters and world beaters become average when they leave).

Top striker: Marcus Stewart.

Top defender: Sol Campbell.

Most memorable moment: Alan Stubbs' return to action against Hibs last week, scoring a goal, qualifying for a championship winners' medal and receiving a heart-warming standing ovation from both sets of fans.

And the team of the season? It just has to be Leigh RMI. In Conference terms they had no money, no fans, no reputation and no chance at the start of the season. By the end they finished fifth - which would have been a play-off place if the Conference was treated like the other divisions above them - beat the champions and finished ahead of well known ex-league clubs like Chester, Hereford, Doncaster and Scarborough.

They may be small and insignificant inside football's big picture but considering they have a squad size and fan base not much bigger than a parks team they have performed miracles no other club in England can compare with.
