REPORTS that Michael Portillo's Press Secretary is already briefing journalists against William Hague and urging them to ridicule him show that the Conservative Party is no longer interested in Britain but now focused entirely on the post election leadership contest.

Despite countless loyalty pledges, Mr Portillo just could not help himself.

What on earth has happened to the Conservative Party? They are fast becoming a joke and look like they could do even worse than John Major did. The only hope Mr Hague has is that voters are so convinced that William Hague is doomed that they stay at home. I hope they don't. I not only look forward to seeing a Labour government being given the mandate to continue investing in public services, but I relish the prospect of seeing a leadership scrap between Ann Widdecombe and Michael Portillo. Ann is definitely the underdog, but at least she is not spending her time undermining her boss.
