KIND-hearted schoolchildren from Plodder Lane School have raised over £1,000 for Bolton Motor Neurone sufferer Mark Gallagher.

And ex-colleagues from the Royal Mail in Wingates packed in the crowds when manager, Dave Ellis, decided to go bald for his old pal.

They were both separate charity stunts to raise vital cash to adapt a car to take 6ft Mark and his family to Land's End for a much-needed holiday in July.

The children took part in a variety of charity events during the spring term to help the Farnworth dad convert the Renault car.

Mark's daughters Emma, 11 and Amy,13, have both been pupils at the school and the teachers and classmates decided to club together to help the local family go on holiday.

As reported in the BEN, Mark was struck down with the incurable disease at 38.

His wife, Helen said: "The school were devastated by the news that Mark had Motor Neurone Disease. They have seen the two girls grow up there. They wanted to do something for them."

The children took part in sponsored discos, non-uniform days, cake selling and sponsored games.

The local family have now raised £3,000 towards their £5,000 target to convert a car to carry Mark and his specially adapted wheelchair for a holiday down south. His former workmates have also pledged to raise £5,000 for Mark -- a former operations manager at the post sorting depot.

Dave Adams, 34, from the Royal Mail said: "Mark is a very good friend and it has really upset everyone about his illness. We want to do something to help. We are holding a number of charity raffles and tombolas to raise the cash -- all we need now is for people to put their hands in their pockets."

Dave is pictured giving his boss Dave Ellis a close shave to bring in cash for Mark.

A charity night will be staged at Dixon Green Labour Club, off Plodder lane, Farnworth, on May 25 with a cabaret disco, tombola and raffles.

Tickets cost £2 and are available from the club with proceeds going towards the Mark Gallagher family fund.
