A BOLTON MP said firm action needed to be taken against drunken yobs following a rampage in Westhoughton.

Ruth Kelly, Labour MP for Bolton West, believed proposed fines for people drinking on the streets would go some way to solving the problem.

Penalty notices of up to £100 will be handed to drunken thugs under the scheme.

Ms Kelly said: "We cannot allow a small minority to wreak havoc in our towns.

"I am becoming increasingly aware that this is an issue which needs to be addressed.

"We are looking at ways to prevent binge drinking in particular. Labour is considering banning happy hours in pubs for that reason."

As reported in the BEN, up to 30 thugs ran through Westhoughton town centre, smashing six windows at Westhoughton library on Market Street on Thursday night.

They began to cause trouble shortly after 9pm when they were moved away from Westhoughton Leisure Centre.

It is understood bricks and coins were thrown at police cars, but no officers were injured and no damage was caused to vehicles.
