PRESTWICH boxer Chris P Bacon could be in line for a world title shot, writes STEVE BOTT.

The Tasmanian terror is well on the way to a shot at South African Sebastian Rothmann's WBU cruiserweight title.

Bacon's connections have held talks with Rothmann's manager and John Robinson, head of the World Boxing Union, and both have agreed, in principle, to a match.

Jack Trickett, Bacon's manager said: "They want to see a tape of Chris first, but there is every chance of bringing of a world title fight for him.

"All the parties concerned have agreed to it. Now it's just a matter of putting it all together. If it does happen it will prbably be in September."

Trickett could not say where the fight is likely to take place, but the multi-talented Bacon, who is off to Australia soon to compete in the national judo championships, is hoping it will be in Manchester.

If it does happen, and Bacon wins, it will top a tremendous year for the former Japanese professional wrestling star. For it's just a few short months since Bacon made a comeback after stepping out of the ring because of a back problem.

A specialist in Sheffield sorted that out for him and Bacon returned to action with a dynamic first round defeat of Zimbabwe's Collice Mutizwa at Bowlers.

There was talk of a British title fight for Bacon, but now attention has switched to the bigger, world stage after the talks with the Rothmann camp.
