A GRANDMOTHER celebrated a birthday she will never forget this week -- by delivering her daughter's new baby.

Debbie Trick, from Atherton, received the "best birthday present ever" in the eight pound shape of her new grandson, Jamie.

The family were celebrating Debbie's 38th birthday at her home in Lilford Street, Howe Bridge, when her 21-year-old daughter Cheryl went into labour.

They got into a car to go to hospital but had to take emergency action when Cheryl said they wouldn't get to the hospital in time.

Debbie, who works at a casino, said: "We threw a towel down on the living room floor and Cheryl pushed and out he came.

"I didn't need any advice -- I have already had four children of my own -- and I delivered him on my own on my birthday.

"We are all absolutely delighted -- he is my best birthday present ever!"

But mum Cheryl, of Bridges Street, Howe Bridge, admitted she did not know she was going into labour until the last minute - despite already having had a child, Callum, now aged two.

She said: "I didn't actually know I was having contractions and I was certain that I wasn't in labour until his head was coming out. I wasn't frightened though and I feel absolutely brilliant now - but I think two children is enough for me now."

An ambulance crew from Hindley arrived and took Cheryl and Jamie to Royal Bolton Hospital's maternity unit but they were allowed out the following day.
