A 16-STRONG team of Bolton schoolgirls will represent Greater Manchester -- at the London Marathon.
The girls -- aged from 11 to 17 -- are from Canon Slade School and were the only local pupils chosen to go to the event on April 22. Boys are represented by a team from a Stalybridge school.
In London, they will run the final 2.8 miles of the 26 miles' course, competing against other other schools from around the country in the Adidas County Regional Challenge.
Canon Slade pupils were chosen because the school has a strong running record, and won the national English schools' cross-country championship last year.
PE teacher Carol Brooking -- a runner and veteran of several London Marathons -- says that all the girls are "delighted" and looking forward to the trip, which is sponsored by Adidas.
The school also has a tradition of fund-raising for children's charities, and has already raised £471 for children with leukaemia via the London event.
