FIRE chiefs have warned residents to take care when using electric blankets.
The warning comes after fire crews were called to a house in Eldercot Road, Deane last night.
Station Officer David Pimblett said Gordon Lowe, aged 40, was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation after the mattress on his bed caught fire.
He had left his electric blanket on and was caught up in the blaze after walking into the bedroom when he smelled smoke.
Station Officer Pimblett added: "Electric blankets are a source of fire and when misused or neglected they can cause damage. People should follow the manufacturers' instructions."
