COME on you citizens of Bolton, what part of the word 'No' don't you understand?

Why do you persist in complaining about roads, traffic, parking charges?

It should be perfectly obvious from Cllr Peter Johnston's and (ex-local government) Tony Boddy's letters last week, that they are tired of trying to show you what is patently obvious: Too many cars, too many motorists trying to do the same thing at the same time.

The very words 'Local Government' should give you a clue. The motor car as a means of transport "shall be eliminated". It is alright to own a car, "but thou shalt not use it on the roads, nor bring it into the town centre".

Local Government will discourage car use by all means in their power until you get the message:

Dual Carrriageways? How antiquated. Make into a single lane so that every journey will take longer. It would be fun, though, to put in two lanes at traffic lights -- then within a few hundred yards revert to one lane. It might even evolve into a new spectator sport, watching the outside 'laners' trying to get in and the inside 'laners' determined to stop them;

Build new roads to help traffic flow? The extension of St Peter's Way? Certainly not. They would only be filled with more cars. Somebody even complained about it taking half-an-hour to get from Dunscar to Crompton Way lights. Tough, says Peter Johnston. I bet he can't wait until the extra traffic from the Eagley Mills development comes on stream, especially since one of the lanes at the lights has been annexed for a bus stop;

Bring your car into town? Horror of horrors! They only create jams in the town centre, and delay councillors and town hall officials from getting to their free car parks. Just think of the expense of having to provide car parks and traffic wardens, together with the danger to pedestrians from these inconsiderate people.

But, wait a minute, shops are really a bit of a nuisance in town centres because they lure car owners in droves. How can this be stopped? Ah yes. Increase business rates and parking charges. That should stop them;

Delay, as long as possible, repair of potholes on all roads in the hope that cars will be so damaged they will no longer be roadworthy.

The only thing the council has not done yet is put up signs on these roads: Pedestrians, cyclists, buses and essential services (i.e. doctors, ambulances and town hall officials) only. I can't understand why they haven't yet done this, as they've put up signs for everything else.

Just think all you ratepayers: If the council didn't have to provide car parks, traffic wardens, and road repairs, your rates would be halved and we would be doing our bit for alleviation of the Greenhouse Effect.

What a Utopia! Almost like the Planet Zog where our councillors come from.
