BUSINESS bosses are being warned to beware of bogus charity callers who have set up a money-making scam.

The fake salesmen have targeted a number of supporters of the Crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers in an attempt to obtain money by deception.

Calls have been received from a number of local firms from representatives selling advertising in so-called Crimestoppers publications.

But when potential advertisers have asked questions or refused to take part in the scheme, the caller's response has been less than professional.

The scams have been investigated but are hampered because callers are careful not to leave their details.

Digby Carter, director of Crimestoppers Trust, said: "These people are attacking genuine firms which may support the Crimestoppers scheme by donating to the charity.

"We would never adopt such methods and wish to make it clear that these rogues are nothing to do with us."

Police have been told of instances where callers have contacted companies asking them to support a drugs education booklet, allegedly backed by Crimestoppers.

It has been stressed that only a few companies are allowed to put the Crimestoppers logo on products that promote the charity.

Anyone who is approached by salesman claiming to sell advertising for the Crimestoppers Trust is urged to take the caller's details and contact the Crimestoppers hotline on 0800 555111.
