ATHERTON Colls' three victory run to jump clear of the NWCL Division One relegation zone came to an end in a 1-0 home defeat by Mossley.

Colls had the better of the game but in front of goal the visitors had the one piece of fortune that settled the issue in their favour.

"It was just about the scrappiest goal we've seen all season" said club press secretary Paul Gregory. "We've got to take heart from the performance because we matched Mossley in every aspect of the game. This is miles better than what we have had this season and it's great to see we are heading in the right direction."

The vital goal was bundled in for Mossley in injury time of the first half. Colls had their chances to get something out of the game but lack of confidence, particularly in striker Darren Maloney, is proving costly.

The popular and experienced striker did enough to show by his efforts that a first goal may just open the floodgates. Centre back Frank Smith won the man of the match vote.

Colls have Abbey Hey as visitors to Alder House tomorrow night.
