BUSINESS for Sterling North West has welcomed figures from the Office of National Statistics which show that British exports rose to a record £187 billion last year.

The organisation, which campaigns against the European single currency, says the figure confirms that Britain is prospering outside the euro.

Mr David Briggs, the North-west regional chairman, said today: "Unemployment in Britain is at its lowest level for 25 years -- almost half the higher Eurozone average -- and in Germany the jobless total has been rising for the last two months.

"By replacing the pound with the euro we risk returning to boom and bust because we would be forced to accept the one-size-fits-all interest rate set by the European Central Bank. Our last currency experiment, the ERM, led to the collapse of 100,000 businesses and caused unemployment to double. Politicians should not repeat that mistake."
