TRANSCO's North-west region has been awarded the ISO 9002 quality management standard.
The award was made to one of the gas pipeline company's administrative sections based in Spa Road, Bolton.
It shows that staff have ironed out inconsistencies in their work and introduced new controls and procedures.
Managers across all Transco's regions are hoping to follow their North West colleagues' lead and win ISO 9002 for all operational departments across the UK.
Mr Howard Parker, Transco's North West Quality Manager, said the key was getting all staff to understand how they contributed in delivering a quality service.
"People who insist on high quality work early on in a chain of tasks can save a lot of unnecessary work later on," he said.
External assessors awarded ISO 9002 to administrative staff after a gruelling independent audit involving testing procedures and interviewing employees.
A certificate was presented to Sir John Parker, the chairman of Transco's parent organisation, The Lattice Group.
