I AM not surprised that the planning inspector came down in favour of

opencast in Over Hulton, as successive governments have indicated that mining is the best way to deal with the smouldering tip at Cutacre.

In fact, this could have been dealt with a long time ago had Bolton Council and then Ruth Kelly not fought against it. Before that the then Conservative Secretary of State, Nicholas Ridley, told us that as soon as the newt issue could be dealt with the plans should go ahead.

We have been given assurances about the effects it will have and I for one will certainly take up Ruth Kelly's offer of reporting any serious problems should they occur. However, if, in four years time, that great big heap at the back of us has been removed and the fires at Cutacre tip extinguished, then it will have been worthwhile.
