A STARSTRUCK seven-year-old was given a surprise speaking role in a forthcoming film when he had only expected to work as an extra.

Thomas Ashton, of Chipping Road, Johnson Fold Estate, was offered extra work along with four of his pals from the Angels Drama Centre in Horwich in a Brit-flick called The People's Cabbage which is being filmed in Manchester.

The Johnson Fold Primary School pupil, who is also a keen kick boxer, caught the attention of the director who asked him to play the role of a diabetic youngster.

Thomas's dad Eddie said: "I couldn't believe it when I found out he had been given a line in the film because he is so shy.

"He's a good mixer and gets involved in everything, but I couldn't imagine him getting up there and speaking.

"Thomas was gobsmacked because he only thought he would be an extra.

"I think his pale expression must have won him the part!"

Thomas and the extras, who included 10-year-old Bolton youngsters Kerry Fox, Chloe Milne, Dale Flemming and Melissa Brown, aged 11, appear as dancers in the spoof film, some of which was shot at the Palace Theatre.

Youngsters aged between five and 16 attend the drama classes at Horwich Parish Church Hall run by professional actress Amanda Fairclough.

Mum-of-two Amanda, of Hope Street, Horwich said: "It's only a low-budget film, so they weren't paid for being extras, but it was great experience for them.

"They all really enjoyed doing it, but I think it's made them realise how much waiting around there is on film sets."

Amanda, aged 37, has starred in TV dramas such as Cops, Fat Friends, Clocking Off and recently appeared in Coronation Street.
