THE TUC is making health and safety at work and on the roads a central theme of its activities in 2001.

Officials are calling for company directors to be jailed if they allow their employees to drive dangerously and neglect their duty of care in the workplace. It is estimated that more than 1,000 road deaths a year involve staff on work-related journeys.

Salford TUC Development Officer Alec McFadden said: "Far too many workers are forced by pressure from their bosses to work excess hours and drive at high speeds because of tight deadlines and crazy bonus systems. Many of these workers are not in trade unions and are not protected or advised by shop stewards and full-time officials."

The union is providing a free number which enables workers to report accidents and receive free legal advice -- 0500 501 123.
