FREEZING temperatures and the thought of finding various checkpoints in 100 metre visibility meant it was a daunting task indeed for the ten Chorley Harriers who entered the Winter Hill fell race -- a gruelling 11-mile trek around Rivington and Belmont.

First man home for Chorley Harriers in a credible 20th position was Alan Alty in a time of 1 hour 54, followed closely by Ian Williams in 1 hour 56.

Chorley Harriers also took 2nd Vet team prize thanks to the effort of Alan Alty, Ian Williams and Malcolm Christy. To complete the field for the Harriers were: 32 Pete Starkey 1 hour 59; 37 Dave Lee 2 hours 5; 44 Dominic Raby 2 hours 7; 57 Peter Gillham 2 hours 14; 66 Steve Thomas 2 hours 23; 81 John MacDonald 2 hours 33; 90 Jeannette Coleman 3 hours 4; 91 Andy Norris 3 hours 4.

This race is used as a qualifying event in order to enter The Three Peaks race later in the year.

While a coach load of Chorley Harriers went off to the Lake District for the weekend, it left Jon Bell to fly the black and white flag in the Lostock 6.

Finishing in an excellent time of 37 minutes 20, he said afterwards: "The recent increase in mileage, preparing for Sheffield Marathon is starting to pay off.

"I was really pleased with my time and how I felt."

Paul Swindells in his first year of road racing is getting very close to breaking the 40-minute barrier, missing it by just three seconds.

Other results: 78th Chris Cowley 38mins 58; 93 Paul Swindells 40 mins 03; 112 Claire Goulding 41 mins 15; 116 Sarah Scarrott 41 mins 26; 187 Eddie Pugh 46 mins 02; 195 Tony Totham 46mins 32; 226 Donna Williams 49mins 29.
