A PHOENIX Nights superfan has organised a Peter Kay convention -- at the club where the comedy was filmed -- to celebrate the end of the first series.

Father-of-two Paul Wilde has watched most episodes at St Gregory's Social Club, in Farnworth, and loved the programme so much he wanted to mark its final screening in a special way.

On Sunday evening he hopes to be joined by other Phoenix Night fans at the Church Street venue where they will enjoy a pint while watching the final episode.

It was initially hoped Peter Kay would be making an appearance but a spokeswoman said he will not be able to attend.

However, it is hoped the comedian will be donating a number of signed items which will be raffled off and the proceeds given to a local charity of his choice.

Paul, who lives in Davyhulme, Manchester, wanted to organise the convention after finding the programme the funniest thing he had seen on television in years.

Atmosphere

The 41-year-old said: "I started travelling down to watch Phoenix Nights at the club because I felt the urge to go and see where it was made and really feel the atmosphere of the place.

"A lot of the extras in the series are regulars at the club, who go in on a Sunday night to watch the programme and it was quite a buzz being in the place where it was filmed and watching it on TV. I thought other fans might want to do it, too."

Paul said many of the extras were proud the show had been situated in their club and had some funny tales to tell about the filming of the series. One day they could not get into the pool room because a horse which featured in the Wild West episode was being kept there.

Others were left confused when the little men in Bolton Wanderers shirts who appeared in last week's show walked into the club. Some thought a children's five-a-side game was going to take place.

Paul, a writer and cartoonist, said he hopes to organise a full-scale Peter Kay convention in the summer. His wife Janet is also a big fan.

He added: "I think Peter is like an old-time comedian like Eric Morecambe and Tommy Cooper. People have a real affection for him. I think he will be massive."

The convention starts at 7.30pm. Admission is 20p but entry is limited and anyone wanting to attend should call Paul on 07887 567827. Alternatively, you may be able to find details on www.peterkay.co.uk Paul Wilde: He's 'booked' the convention to celebrate the Peter Kay series Ref: F1541-15
