A BOLTON lorry driver could hold the key to the death of a policeman killed in Essex while on traffic duty.

Essex police are anxious to trace the driver of a white-cabbed lorry who told traffic officers about the fatal crash but drove off without leaving his details.

PC Rod Daniels was directing traffic away from a minor road accident when he was in a collision with a red Ford Sierra on the A12 near Kelvedon on February 8.

The 53-year-old, who had served with Essex Police for 31 years, had been trying to warn motorists of a vehicle blocking one lane of the carriageway.

The male occupants of the red Sierra car were left shaken but not seriously injured.

Police believe the lorry driver was a key witness to the incident. He is described as white, in his 40s, of stocky build, with grey receding hair.

It is known he had a Northern accent as he used his CB radio to tell other lorry drivers of the crash.

His vehicle was an ERF articulated lorry with bold red writing that included the word "Bolton". It was towing a 40ft blue curtain-sided trailer.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Essex Traffic Police on 01376 330722.
