A FUND-RAISING campaign to raise £25 million for Manchester's Christie Hospital has received two £1 million donations.
The gifts - from North-west travel agent Airtours and the charity Children With Leukaemia - means the hospital is now within £1 million of its centenary appeal target.
Holidaymakers' unwanted foreign coins have been collected by Airtours staff for the past three years to raise £545,000.
The remainder was donated by chairman David Crossland and his wife Anne.
Mr Crossland said: "I have a good friend who has had cancer. When you become close to cancer, you become close to a place like Christie's."
Eddie O'Gorman, who set up Children With Leukaemia, said: "One of the key remaining objectives of Christie's Centenary Appeal is the setting up and equipping of a world class cancer diagnostic centre where the charity's money will be used to advance research into childhood leukaemia."
Angela Roden, Christie's Appeals Director, said: "Words cannot convey our gratitude for these marvellous gifts."
