WHEN Mrs Margaret Davies, of The Woodlands, Lostock, got down to her spring cleaning ("I have been clearing out as one does at this time of year," she writes) she came across this photograph of St Stephen's, Kearsley, Brownies.

"It is a case of where are you now, as most of the girls will be reaching their 40th birthday this year," she tells me.The picture was taken in May, 1972, and the event was arranged as a birthday party for three of the Brownies, Mrs Davies's daughter Jillian, Linda Obersby and Judith Hill. However, Mrs Davies, who was Tawny Owl, and Jillian (it was her 11th birthday) were leaving Kearsley and moving to Formby (they came back to Bolton four years later), so it was a celebration tinged with sadness.

Mrs Davies was presented with a vase, "which I still treasure". Mrs Ann Grant was Brown Owl.

Mrs Davies says: "I would like to say happy 40th birthday to these girls, and all the other girls in the photograph."
